Learning a musical instrument is usually very expensive, but we offer tuition free. Buying a musical instrument is often a dilemma too. Do you buy cheap, until you know you are going to stick at it? Or would you be more inclined to stick at it, and progress quicker if you had a quality instrument? Everyone in a pipe band uses a practice chanter and a practice pad. You start on them, and even the professional musicians amongst us, still use them. They cost about £40, and you will always use them. So there’s no dilemma, it’s so easy to get started. The next problem is finding the right teacher. It’s fair to say that in the part of the world you don’t have much choice, but a number of our members help with the tuition so you get the benefit from a range of teaching styles.
So if you live in or around the East Riding of Yorkshire and would like to start, please email us through the contact us page, or find us on Facebook

The benefits of playing a musical instrument have been proven to strengthen abstract reasoning skills in children, and reduce stress in adults. For everyone, it increases productivity, builds confidence, teaches discipline and taking responsibility for self development. All important skills for accomplishing anything in life.
Some people learn to play an instrument because something has sparked that desire, and they do so at home, hooked on that sense of mastery. But without an outlet or regular tuition, that desire can soon diminish. Learning in a band, adds another dimension, you’re part of a greater cause, you become part of a team, you receive support from your peers, you become more motivated to practice, and as a result you progress quicker.
You might be looking to keep the kids busy during lock down. You might not have considered that it could be something you do together. There is no better way to motivate your children then to lead by example and learning a musical instrument together or being part of the same band is great way to increase the time spent with your children and to keep them away from screens.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, like most social groups, Beverley & District Pipe Band turned to online sessions to continue the development of the band. We adapted our style of tuition to work around the latency issues, with surprisingly positive results. Leading us to wonder if an online approach may lend itself well to recruitment too.
We can point you in the direction of mail-order suppliers so you can take delivery of your chosen practice instrument at home, and we can teach you online in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a good internet connection and a device with a camera. Skype is free (not limited to 40 minutes like Zoom), and is supported on Windows, OSX, iOS and Android.
